This spring, graduates came back to LHS to participate in a spring softball tournament to raise money for LHS scholarships for students looking to further their education after graduation.
One of the primary goals of the LHSAA was to raise enough money in our first few months of operation to award at least one senior scholarship to a deserving LHS student. We chose to hold an athletic fundraiser due to the overwhelming responses we received from our online Alumni Interest Form. After much planning and collaboration with the athletic department, we held our first-ever Alumni Softball Tournament on May 1, 2022 on the LHS baseball field.
On the day of the event, two teams of nine players arrived at LHS to go head-to-head in a 6-inning soft-pitch game. The roster included former LHS athletes like Mark Maggio, Leanna Reginald, Katie Ayala, Jeff Fiscina and Toni Ann Pierce.
PJ Potter, former pitcher of the 2014 baseball team, was especially excited to be back on the field and catch up with old friends:
"It was really awesome and nostalgic seeing past teammates, coaches, or people that you just knew through the baseball and softball community in Lodi. I think it’s really nice to draw back to your roots...A lot of people were catching up. It wasn’t just about playing. And I think [the LHSAA] has an event that can withstand itself for the next several years. I think people will continue to show up, especially because people know that this is a thing. And it went so well!
We were also joined by spectators, including 1985 softball state champion, Andrea Russo, beloved former TJMS gym teacher, Mrs. Iwanicki, and athletic director, Pat Tirico.
In the end, Potter and the Blue Team took the victory from the Orange Team. However, the real winners were not one, but two, senior students who were awarded the LHSAA scholarships in June due to the generosity of the fundraiser participants and other donors from social media.
A big thank you to Coach Tirico, Coach Geisler, and Coach Terhune for donating their time and equipment for the event and to Mr. D'Amico and the guidance department for making this first year a smooth one.
The Lodi High School Alumni Association is planning to hold the second-annual Alumni Softball Tournament again in Spring 2023.
